Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson speaks of 'stress his family endured' after domestic abuse case

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson has spoken of the stress his family had to endure after he was charged with domestic abuse .

He was cleared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court of assaulting his partner Robyn Lauchlan outside Edinburgh Christmas market on December 13.

He said: “Personally it’s been very hard. Obviously it was a personal issue.

“It was very stressful on all my family and everyone involved in it. But justice has been done and we can draw a line under it.

“Coming to work and fully concentrating on the team and trying to keep things going was the good bit.”

The Northern Irishman denied the charges and Ms Lauchlan had earlier asked prosecutors not to bring charges against him, telling the trial Robinson had been trying to calm her down when she got upset on Waverly Bridge.

The football manager was acquitted by the judge after deciding that there was not enough evidence to return guilty verdicts.

His partner criticised prosecutors outside the court for pursuing the case.

She said: “Today, for the first time in almost 12 torturous weeks, the system has listened to us.

“The facts have finally been heard. In no shape or form have I ever been a victim of domestic abuse.

“At no stage did Stephen push, shove or frighten me. He did not do the things he was accused of.

“Despite being the alleged victim of domestic abuse, I was not interviewed by the police at any point.

“I was never approached by the Crown Office at any stage to give my version of events.

“It is only in the witness box today that I have finally been listened to and been able to show this flawed case for what it was.

“The stress this has caused to both of us, and our families, is impossible to emphasise enough.

“We thank everyone who has supported us throughout this horrible process.”
