Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson reckons the Aberdeen 8 should not be 'vilified' for virus bombshell

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson doesn't believe Aberdeen should be "vilified" for the Covid-19 outbreak at Pittodie.

Speaking at the 'Well press conference ahead of the visit of Dundee United tomorrow, the gaffer believes all Scottish football clubs are taking the necessary precautions amid the pandemic.

Robinson revealed he has been cracking down on the squad on WhatsApp, but admits there are things that are out of managers and players control.

The Dons' Saturday clash with St Johnstone has been called off after two positive Covid-19 tests among Derek McInnes' squad forced a further six players into a fortnight's self-isolation.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack today added they "were fully prepared to play the game tomorrow" but "are very grateful that the decision has been to postpone."

Speaking today, Robinson said: "We test two or three times a week and are doing more than any other people in society really.

"Even the NHS, they are testing with symptoms, we constantly test and have protocols in place.

"Unfortunately we can't control what people really do outside of football. If somebody is positive we have the protocols in place to deal with that.

"I believe Aberdeen have done everything in their power, and I genuinely believe Scottish football is doing everything in their power to make sure the protocols are followed.

"We remind them constantly and my WhatsApp messages to the players are very clear. The problem is more what happens away from football.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes (SNS Group)

"Family members may not be as strict as us and you are open to do that we can't control what they do, but all we can do is our very, very best.

"There is going to be people who test positive for it throughout the season, there is no doubt about that.

"If somebody is positive they get taken out, no matter if it's your best player or a young kid, they get taken out and anybody who has been in contact with them gets taken out.

"That's the sacrifice Scottish football is making. I think they have to be credited for that and not vilified for it."
