Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson hits back at 'rubbish' morale criticism after St Johnstone win

Boss Stephen Robinson dubbed criticism of team morale "rubbish" after Motherwell won their first league game of the season against St Johnstone.

After a disappointing start to the season, Allan Campbell's goal earned a narrow 1-0 win over the Saints today at Fir Park.

Despite still sitting bottom of Scottish Premiership on goal difference, Robinson believes the squad will get a huge lift.

He told Motherwell TV: "You hear all the rubbish from outside that there is bad morale and people are down; it never was the case

"I carry the burden as a manager because I'm desperate to win football matches, but the boys believed in what we were doing.

"It lifts the belief in themselves. I've never stopped believing in them, but to win a game of football it relieves a bit of pressure off them, and we can go and continue that on Thursday night."

The gaffer believes the showing against Callum Davidson's side showed 'Well can play in many different ways.

"We've played some very, very good football without and end product," he said.

"We said we wanted to win today with a determination. Defenders defending for their lives, midfielders landing on second balls and strikers running themselves into the ground.

"The football will come if you show you can do the basics right and we showed we can win in a different manner."

"It's the least possession we have had but I don't think Trevor [Carson] was troubled at all."
