Motherwell boss loving supporters connection as he opens up Dingwall applause that left him 'a bit embarrassed' after defeat

275 Motherwell fans journeyed 368 miles to watch their team get beat off Ross County on Tuesday night - and still clapped the players off the park.

It's proven to 'Well boss Graham Alexander that the Fir Park support is right behind his men after a strong 2021.

Motherwell's return to Premiership action after the winter break did not go to plan as County swept past them with 10 men. They remain fourth and in a European spot.

It was a long journey back for those in claret and amber but supporters still applauded their team as they made their way off the park.

Alexander's men were booed off the park after their League Cup exit to Dundee in August and he admits a similar response was probably merited in Dingwall.

He said ahead of Saturday's Scottish Cup fourth round match with Championship club Morton: "Rather than make up for Tuesday, we need to reward the fans who followed us up the other night.

"They gave us brilliant acknowledgment, even at the end of the game. We were all hurting and they were still applauding us off.

"I felt a bit embarrassed but it shows the support this team has. I felt a great warmth from that. We've had difficult moments in my year here, they've had to get to know me and vice-versa.

"Tuesday made it clear to me the feeling between supporters and the team. I wasn't expecting that response as I don't think I would have been clapping!

"The supporters see we have done a lot of good things this season so they don't just turn on us after a bad result. Our home record is very good and they have a part to play in that."

Alexander knows how much a cup run would mean to supporters, adding: "Last year was the 30th anniversary of the Scottish Cup win in 1991.

"We got a feel of what it meant to Motherwell supporters back then and most supporters I speak to always speak about the cup.

"They see that as an ambition and as a thing they would love to experience again. We hold that responsibility dearly."
