Motherwell boss Graham Alexander wants to keep 'fantastic' Liam Kelly

Graham Alexander has reiterated his desire to keep Liam Kelly at Motherwell next season - if QPR are willing to let him go.

The 25 year-old proved his worth against St Mirren when he made a terrific penalty save to deny Jamie McGrath, who had scored all eight of his penalties for the Buddies before Kelly's save.

The former Rangers goalkeeper has been outstanding since moving to Lanarkshire in January from the English Championship side and Kelly has expressed his happiness at Fir Park.

Alexander would love to have Kelly at his disposal next season, adding: “We have spoken to Liam and QPR about a while ago when he said he would be interested in coming back next year.

“It has been on the back burner as we have tried to get permanent players signed up.

“If his future lies out of QPR we would certainly be interested. We would really like to keep him.”

Man of the match Kelly made seven saves as he kept a clean sheet against St Mirren as Motherwell secured all three points courtesy of Devante Cole's second half winner.

Kelly made a rare mistake for Kyle Lafferty's opener for Kilmarnock in Motherwell's last Premiership fixture but Alexander was delighted with his reaction.

He said: “He has done great for us, in the last league game he made a mistake and I think he is still whipping himself about that.

“It was a massive save from the penalty and he doesn’t have to make anything up to me as he has been fantastic since he came in.

The crucial win puts Motherwell on the verge of safety and a point against Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton Accies next Wednesday would guarantee their survival.

However, Alexander wants his side to remain focused on every game as Motherwell still have a strong chance of finishing in seventh place - the best of the rest.

He said: “I know the league says we are 11 clear but our ambition is to take as many points as we can in the last four games and finish as high as we can.

“That’s a big win with our tally and results elsewhere have been reasonably good but I don’t want that to impact our approach in our next games.

“We have to commit to every game and make sure we take more points.

“Staying up was the first target but our effort and commit shouldn’t stop there so we will keep our foot to the floor.
