Motherwell boss Graham Alexander 'very disappointed' in booking from ref Kevin Clancy

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander expressed his disappointment in receiving a yellow card from referee Kevin Clancy.

The 'Well boss was cautioned just before half time in the goalless draw with St Mirren after the fourth official instructed referee Clancy to speak to Alexander.

The former Scotland international was adamant that he behaved in a correct manner and insisted he would admit otherwise - as he did when sent off in the Lanarkshire derby.

Alexander said: “No, I wasn’t surprised but I was very disappointed by it.”

“I don’t want to compare anything {to down south} but I felt like I was punished for trying to coach my team and that’s my job.

“We weren’t doing anything different from any other bench. I was respectful, I certainly didn’t swear or call anyone names.

"I don’t know whether I’m supposed to stand there like a tripod - I’m passionate about the game but that’s all it was.

“If I’d crossed a line I’d hold my hands up because that’s happened before but not here.”

Motherwell produced a much improved performance in the draw against St Mirren.

The Steelmen applied constant pressure in the second half and came agonisingly close to scoring when Devante Cole struck the post.

The Fir Park side produced a disappointing performance in defeat to St Johnstone on Saturday but Alexander was delighted with his players' response.

He said: “Our players’ commitment was absolutely magnificent, the way they approached the game was superb and I thought we probably deserved to take all three points.

“We were really unlucky with the effort that came back off the post and we could have had a penalty first half but the way they went about their business.

"It showed that they cared about winning points and being a team together but to come here, get a clean sheet and be dominant for periods was pleasing.

“The boys knew they’d let themselves down in the two previous games, they had to show a response to that and this was black-and-white compared to Saturday.

“In fairness, they know that too: they didn’t come in on Monday and try to kid themselves or us that they’d given their best but they did tonight and that’s all we can ask for.

“That’s now the minimum we can expect from now until the end of the season. Could we have done things better on the ball? I thought we could have but we have to start with that effort."
