Motherwell boss Graham Alexander targeting quality signings as he reveals transfer battles

Graham Alexander is prioritising quality over quantity in the last ten days of the transfer window.

The deadline for adding new players is the end of August and the Motherwell boss is working hard to add to his squad.

Alexander confirmed that the Steelmen are working on a few transfers but he stressed that he’s only looking to bring in quality players.

“Not just bodies but good players,” Alexander admitted when asked if he's looking to add to his squad.

“It’s important that we are not just getting numbers because we want good quality.

“We want to try and improve the team and the squad. We have a couple of things going on in the background but we don’t know whether we will win those battles.

“We’ve identified a couple of players that we feel can help us improve. We will keep trying until the last minute of the window and I know when we get to that point, we will have a good squad.

“Players will have more minutes under their belt and we can look forward to the rest of the season.

“I’m happy with the squad just now and I think there are some really good players in there. I’m excited about what they can become and I love working with them.

“They are great lads to work with and their approach to training has been exceptional. I know they will keep working hard to win those games.”

Alexander has been exploring different markers for players but he concedes that search has been complicated due to Covid restrictions.

He added: “That is part of the process and it’s difficult. When we brought in Juhani [Ojala], it took a bit of time to get over the line despite the deal being reasonably straightforward between ourselves and him.

“All the regulations to get him into Scotland and to get him playing were long and drawn out. I’ve seen that a couple of other clubs are going through the same process.

“With the deadline coming quickly, if we are bringing in a player from [abroad] then it will have to happen quite soon.

“You can sign right up to that and the process of getting them over the line can continue after the window shuts.”
