Motherwell boss Graham Alexander felt Bobby Madden penalty award 'was coming' in Saints draw

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander says he felt a penalty was coming for St Mirren as his first game in charge of the Steelmen ended in a stalemate.

Alexander refused to criticise referee Bobby Madden for giving the penalty against Bevis Mugabi following a trip on Lee Erwin, but says there was "a lot of noise" around every challenge on a Saints player.

Jamie McGrath's 79th-minute spot kick kept a point in Paisley after Devante Cole had opened the scoring midway through the first half.

Alexander says he was pleased with his charges, but they're "hurting" after the result.

He said: "If we had kept doing what we did in the first half we would have won the game, but I think we've been harshly dealt with by the penalty.

"I thought it was coming because there was an influence, there was a lot of noise on virtually every challenge, and I've seen it back, there's a limited touch, if any at all.

Motherwell's Bevis Mugabi (R) can't believe referee Bobby Madden has given a penalty for a foul on Lee Erwin (SNS Group)

"I feel for the guy in there because I don't think they deserved that scoreline.

"I'm not going to talk about the referee, I think he managed the game well and did what he could, and they've got a split-decision to make, but you can feel these things coming because you see the little things going on.

"We've got to take it on the chin and go again.

"It's bitter-sweet, the first half was really good from us, because we had only had about 50 minutes with them the day before and had tried out a few things.

"In the second half we forgot the things that we did well in the first half a little bit more and allowed St Mirren to have a little bit more territory, without really hurting us.

"I'm really happy with the way the players really took on board the limited amount of information yesterday and actually put it into practice, and I could see they were maybe tired, they were trying to hold onto a 1-0 lead."
