Motherwell boss Graham Alexander rues offside goal but lauds 'magnificent' team

Despite crashing out the Scottish Cup on penalties, Graham Alexander labelled his players ' magnificent' after their brilliant late comeback in normal time.

Motherwell looked down and out with just ten minutes to go but goals from Ricki Lamie and Tony Watt salvaged extra-time.

The Steelmen grabbed the ascendancy in the game and looked the most likely to secure a famous win but they eventually lost out 4-2 on penalties.

Mark O'Hara and Steven Lawless missed for the Fir Park side in the shootout but Alexander was left proud of his players' efforts.

"I'm gutted for everybody because I thought the players were magnificent," the 49 year-old boss said.

"We came with a game plan to frustrate at first which worked really well, I don't think they had a shot on target in the first half.

"We wanted to create a bit more but we took a step back after half-time for some reason and allowed them to have easy possession in our half and we were punished for it, sorely, with a couple of goals.

"I thought the reaction after that was absolutely amazing. The players showed the character to get on the ball, press from the front and showed what a quality team they could be.

"To come back against such a fantastic team like Hibs in a pressured game, to equalise and I thought there was only going to be one winner after that before the penalties."

Jackson Irvine appeared to be offside when he tapped home Hibernian's second goal on 79 minutes and Alexander confirmed that the Australian's goal should have been disallowed.

He said: "It was offside, I've seen it. I only seen it after because you can't tell at the time but what can you do?"

Motherwell contained Hibernian's considerable attacking threat in the first-half without troubling their opponents.

It was only after the introduction of Steven Lawless and the excellent Tony Watt that the Steelmen began to threaten but Alexander had no regrets over his approach.

He said: "No [there are no regrets]. We've came to a team away from home and you don't want to be chasing a game early on.

"We've lost some important players in certain areas so we had to change the way that we played.

"We know that between their three forward players that they have a fantastic goal record and they didn't have a shot on target in first half.

"I do regret how we started the second half where we didn't really put any pressure on them and it was too easy to get to our final third.

"We know that we can defend the first goal better.

"But we've came away to a team that's already qualified in Europe and have been in two semi-finals already and over the whole piece, we were a very good team."
