Motherwell boss Graham Alexander rejects inferiority complex as he welcomes fan excitement ahead of new season

Graham Alexander wants Motherwell supporters to be excited and optimistic about the new season.

Up to 6,500 supporters could be in Fir Park on Sunday for Motherwell's opening Premiership fixture of the season against Hibernian.

Alexander realises that the Steelmen are competing against clubs with bigger budgets but he insists his side will not enter any game with a negative mindset.

The 'Well boss enjoyed a positive first six months in charge and he refused to dampen any supporter's enthusiasm ahead of the start of the new campaign.

“I want excitement,” said Alexander. “I want positivity, I want people to believe and to be optimistic.

“That’s how I am and that’s how I want my players to be. I don’t want to dampen people’s spirits but we all understand the difficulties and challenges that Motherwell face, year in and year out, competing against big clubs.

“But we’ve got to have that excitement and ambition to be the best that we can be and beat any club that we play against on any day.

“We will never go into any game of football feeling second best before we start that game. We might not win the game but we will never go into a game of football with an inferiority complex, in any game of football, ever

“That’s the start and base of what we want to achieve as a football club. We have to compete every single day to get those habits and that mentality going.

“I don’t want to dampen anyone’s excitement about the start of the season. It’s a privilege sport and we are privileged to be a part of it, it’s a brilliant game.

Alexander still wants to add a couple of new faces to his squad before the transfer window closes next month.

He said: “There is still a bit of work [to be done]. We are still a bit light in certain areas but we are really happy with our recruitment so far.

“We’ve brought in a real mix of good quality, experience and youth but we are certainly still a bit light.

Motherwell added Callum Slattery from Southampton (SNS Group)

“We want to carry, maybe, two or three more players than we first planned because of the issues with Covid - they are not going away.

“We could lose players at any point through no fault of our own. We have to be strong enough to withstand that as the season goes through.

“We are still looking and working hard. We’ve got some players that we are trying to get over the line and we’ve still got an open mind about what we might find being let go by other clubs.”
