Motherwell boss Graham Alexander praises Tony Watt's commitment after speedy recovery from injury

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander revealed that Tony Watt's return from injury came as a pleasant surprise.

The 27-year-old had been missing for over a month but he put his body on the line for the Steelmen despite only taking part in one light training season.

Watt's introduction - and Motherwell's subsequent return to Alexander's preferred 4-3-3 formation - inspired Motherwell to an impressive late comeback.

The former Celtic star equalised with a clever header late on from Stephen O'Donnell's excellent cross and 'Well boss Alexander admitted that although it was risk, Watt wanted to play.

“Tony was a gamble for us," Alexander explained after the dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Hibs in the Scottish Cup.

"If it was a league game we wouldn't have done it because we're safe now.

“Because it was the cup, it was win or bust. Tony put himself forward and only trained on Friday afternoon, which was light.

“We thought it was worth having him in the squad. He wanted to play which was a surprise to me because I didn't expect to have him back.

“Even if he can't train for a couple of weeks, we felt it was worth going for it today.

“And Tony really helped us when he came on.”
