Motherwell boss Graham Alexander bemoans dreadful start in Lanarkshire derby defeat

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander was disappointed with his side's disastrous start in the defeat to rivals Hamilton.

The Steelmen lost three goals, their captain to a red card and almost any opportunity of victory within a crazy first 31 minutes.

The Fir Park side entered the Lanarkshire derby in excellent form with three wins in their last four games but were startled by Accies' brilliant start which left Alexander frustrated.

He said: "The first goal certainly because it's almost the complete reverse of everything we have been doing over the last few games. We showed how well we defended on Wednesday.

"When we analysed it with the players, it's the players that produce the clips for us and they were absolutely spot-on with that.

"On Monday we will come in and we will ask the questions and they will know all the answers because they will see it and know exactly what went wrong.

"But the biggest thing in professional football is how you train and the knowledge you have off the pitch, and then putting it into pressure situations, and today we were found wanting, certainly in the first 15-20 minutes.

"We made poor decisions and that gave the opponent the opportunity to take advantage. If we had defended with the same ideas as we have done previously, they wouldn't have scored that first goal.

"And they know that. It's back to the training pitch and work as hard as we always do."

Motherwell were much improved after the break but the visitors appeared to take their foot off the gas after David Moyo added a fourth.

Mark O'Hara pulled back a consolation goal from the penalty spot but the 49 year-old manager admitted it was too little too late.

He said: "We got going in the second half but it was too late by then.

We had a poor start with the first goal which from our perspective was a really bad goal to concede. After the way we have defended for the last six or seven games, to give it away so cheaply.

“The players will know exactly how we should have defended it because of the work we have done and we haven’t."
