Motherwell blindsided by Covid rule change as Dundee United player starts after false positive

Motherwell were totally in the dark over a rule change that has allowed Dundee United to name a player in their squad for tonight’s Fir Park clash despite returning a false-positive Covid-19 test.

But Steelmen boss Graham Alexander said “I trust the authorities” after learning that players no longer have to self-isolate for 10 days if they are shown to be negative after testing positive.

Hibs boss Jack Ross was furious earlier this season when he was denied the chance to field Alex Gogic after the midfielder returned a false-positive.

Hamilton Accies had a similar scenario when three players had to sit out and boss Brian Rice was adamant at the time that the rule shouldn’t be changed mid-season as he called for consistency throughout the campaign.

However, guidelines have changed although Record Sport Online understands Motherwell were unaware and were informed after checking with the SFA after learning United had included a player who returned a false-positive.

Speaking to BBC ahead of the match in Lanarkshire, boss Alexander said: “I trust the authorities”.
