Motherwell and Airdrie legend Billy Reid has passed away

Tributes have been paid to former Motherwell and Airdrie star Billy Reid, who has died aged 83.

Popular inside-forward Reid was one of the famous 'Ancell Babes', having signed for Motherwell on his 17th birthday in 1955.

He went on to make 73 appearances for the club, playing alongside younger brother Sammy, before leaving for Airdrie in 1961.

Reid played for Airdrie for seven years, before fulfilling a number of roles with the club.

A statement issued by Motherwell read: "He remained a big fan of the club, and was a member of our former players' club.

"Our thoughts are with his family."

Former Airdrie boss Bobby Watson told the club's website: "Billy had a long connection with Airdrie, and he gave his whack for the Diamonds.

"He was a great scout and coach, alongside folk like Ian McMillan, Bobby Morrison, Dan McAlindon and Wilson Humphries.

"Our thoughts are with Billy's wife Joan and his family and friends at this sad time."
