Motherwell have today paid tribute to former player Willie McSeveney, who has passed away aged 92.
The Shotts-born inside forward spent a decade at the club as a player, and captained their famous 'Ancell Babes' side. His debut goal against Third Lanark clinched promotion into the top flight.
McSeveney started at Wishaw Juniors and moved to Dunfermline in 1948, before signing for Motherwell in 1954 for a fee of £1200.
He helped Motherwell to the 1954 League Cup final where they lost to Hearts, and two Scottish Cup semi-finals, where Clyde and Rangers ran out winners.
McSeveney spent a decade at Fir Park as a player and, after retiring, coached the reserves, helping to develop players such as Keith MacRae, Peter McCloy and Joe Wark.
In his time at Motherwell as a player, McSeveney played in every position except goalkeeper, and in 256 appearances, he scored 28 goals.
Motherwell said in a statement: "It is with regret that we have learned of the death of former player Willie McSeveney.
"Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
