Motherwell 1 Rangers 1: Itten equaliser maintains Gers' unbeaten record as 'Well move above Lanarkshire rivals

Motherwell came within 18 minutes of ending Rangers' unbeaten record in the Premiership.

The excellent Devante Cole fired Motherwell ahead on 21 minutes and they defended brilliantly until Cedric Itten came off the bench to equalise on 72 minutes.

Remarkably, all four of the Swiss striker's league goals this season have been against Motherwell. Despite their winless run now standing at 12 games it was a good result for the 'Well who move off the bottom of table and above rivals Hamilton Accies.

Graham Alexander made two changes for his managerial debut at Fir Park.

Jake Hastie was ineligible against his parent side and was replaced by Sherwin Seedorf while Robbie Crawford was handed a start with Mark O'Hara missing due to concussion protocols.

Alexander deployed a 4-3-3 formation with Seedorf and Tony Watt flanking Devante Cole.

There were promising signs for the hosts as they attempted to play out from defence and imposed a high press on Rangers when possible during an encouraging opening 15 minutes.

Allan Campbell has been Motherwell's best player this season and he was at the heartbeat of their encouraging start.

The Scotland under-21 international robbed Alfredo Morelos of possesion and drove menacingly at the Rangers defence before unleashing a tame shot from 25 yards out that was comfortably gathered by Allan McGregor.

The Steelmen were rewarded for their brilliant start when Devante Cole fired them ahead on 21 minutes.

Liam Polworth slipped in Tony Corner just inside the box and the former Celtic man drilled a pinpoint low ball across goal for Cole to tap home for his second goal in two games since Alexander arrived.

Rangers dominated possession during the opening half but struggled to breakdown a resolute 'Well defence.

Their best opportunity arrived on 28 minutes when Morelos arrived to meet Borna Barisic's left-footed cross but the Colombian's header drifted narrowly wide of the post.

Rangers forced seven corners in the first-half but failed to force Liam Kelly into a meaningful save during as Motherwell comfortably held their lead at the break.

Ianis Hagi was heavily involved at the start of the second half as he received a yellow card for a late challenge on Poworth before he was clattered by Jake Carroll as the Motherwell defender entered referee Don Robertson's book.

Goalscorer Cole proved his value in his own box when he showed great defensive awareness to clear Connor Goldson's header off the line on 56 minutes.

Rangers applied serious pressure as the second half progressed as Motherwell struggled to get out their own half.

James Tavernier flashed a header across goal on 66 minutes before Declan Gallaagher cleared the Rangers captain's dangerous free-kick with Morelos lurking.

Rangers dominance was eventually rewarded when Cedric Itten equalised on 72 minutes. The substitute bulleted a header from Barisic's cross past a hapless Kelly.
