Motherwell 0 Kilmarnock 2 as Ayrshire side slip back into relegation danger

Kilmarnock slipped back to 11th place in the Premiership table after a dismal defeat to Motherwell this afternoon.

The Rugby Park side went down to goals from Devante Cole and former Killie defender Stephen O'Donnell.

Due to Ross County winning at Dundee United, the East Ayrshire side slip below the Staggies and are a point behind them.

And with Hamilton Accies beating St Mirren, Killie are now just two points above bottom spot.

It took the hosts just three minutes to get the first shot away when Nathan McGinley fired an effort from the edge of the box but it fell just wide.

Rory McKenzie had a chance two minutes later when he picked up a pass from Kyle Lafferty but his tame effort was easily saved by keeper Liam Kelly.

In the ninth minute, Jake Hastie had a fantastic chance when he had a free header from five yards out but he couldn’t keep it down and it flew over the bar.

Sam Foley tried his luck from distance in the 17th minute after a corner was knocked down to him but his effort flew wide of the post and left Killie custodian Danny Rogers untroubled.

Midfielder Alan Power picked up the ball on the edge of the area in the 36th minute but his curling effort was well saved by Kelly who got down well.

The Steelmen took just two minutes of the second half to take the lead thanks to Cole who calmly slotted past Rogers from the edge of the box.

Lafferty worked his way through on goal in the 54th minute, and with few options, he was forced to try and chip Kelly but the effort was poor and went well over the target.

Two minutes later, the Northern Irish striker had another chance; this time his shot was deflected and almost crept in but it ended up going out for a corner which resulted in nothing for Killie.

It was Lafferty again with yet another chance in the 67th minute as he lashed a volley towards goal but his effort was well saved by Kelly.

In the 76th minute, substitute Chris Burke almost grabbed an equaliser with a stunning effort from 25 yards but the bar frustrated the veteran.

And a damaging afternoon in North Lanarkshire was capped when ex-Rugby Park favourite O’Donnell sealed victory with a cool finish.

Killie boss Tommy Wright told BBC Sportscene after the match: "We didn't do enough over the 90 minutes to win the game, the players know that. There were too many mistakes.

"We didn't pass the ball well enough and the performance didn't deserve the three points. I've no qualms with the result."

Killie now face a long wait until their next crucial league game with St Mirren the visitors to Rugby Park on Wednesday week.
