Queensland Theatre Company’s play Motherland
Queensland Theatre Company’s play Motherland Photograph: David Kelly

Brisbane-born Nell left Australia to travel the world, married the Russian prime minister and helped him flee the Nazis during the second world war. Fiesty academic Nina quit her native Russia for Paris, but returned home in her twilight years. And single mother Alyona, a Russian museum curator, is whisked away to Brisbane by an Australian businessman, in search of a brighter future.

Katherine Lyall-Watson’s historical drama intertwines the stories of three women all longing for their homeland.

Based on true stories, the play looks at world-changing events, including the Russian military coup, the Nazi occupation of France and the effects of the Fitzgerald Inquiry on Brisbane, and their impact on individuals.
