Mothercare urgently warns shoppers to spend gift cards today

Mothercare is warning customers to spend their gift cards before midnight otherwise its stores will no longer accept them.

The retailer announced its stores would be closing after the chain went into administration earlier this month.

And now, any customers who have gift cards they still need to spend are being warned they only have hours left to do so.

Fortunately, gift cards can be spent in store and online too - meaning anyone who needs to spend one today can do so from home.

A customer notice has been placed on its website this morning which says: "Gift cards will be an accepted method of payment until midnight tonight.

"Thereafter gift cards will not be accepted."

Mothercare is currently running an "everything must go" closing down sale with all products reduced from prams to furniture to clothing and car seats.

The company had been trying to sell off the UK arm for several months and restructuring had recently seen a number of branches shut down and it currently operates just 79, down from 137, with around 2,500 employees.

The struggling retailer fell to a £36.3million loss last year under a controversial company voluntary arrangement (CVA).

Administration took place just months after Mothercare sold off its Early Learning Centre arm to The Entertainer for £13.5million.
