Mothercare sales decline as baby retailer continues to axe stores

Sales at Mothercare have fallen as the chain fights to transform the business.

Like-for-like UK sales at the mother and baby retailer declined by 8.8 per cent in the fourth quarter - although this is an improvement on the previous two quarters.

Mothercare, which has a huge store at Cribbs Causeway, shut its Weston-super-Mare branch in March as part of its closure plan.

The chain has closed 40 stores in the past three months, meaning the retailer now has 80 UK branches left - down from 137 in 2018.

The news means Mothercare’s performance is in line with its expectations.

Mark Newton-Jones, chief executive of Mothercare, said: “We have continued to make significant progress.

“Whilst this has been a difficult but necessary process, to right-size the UK, it has meant that we have had to say goodbye to many loyal and longstanding colleagues.

“Their approach and professionalism have been outstanding right until the last day of operation for which we thank them sincerely.”

Mr Newton-Jones admitted there are still “challenges” ahead for Mothercare, which sold its Early Learning Centre brand to The Entertainer toy chain last month for £13.5million.

He added: “We expect market conditions in the UK and in some international markets to remain challenging.

“We enter the new financial year in a more robust position as a restructured business fit for the future and with reduced levels of debt.

“We have a significantly smaller UK store estate and our International operations remain cash generative. We look forward to the new financial year and to delivering the next phase of our strategic transformation plan.”
