A mother has appeared in court accused of trying to poison her daughter with a concoction of chilli and ginger and threatening to kill her.

Beatrice Beeko, 61, pleaded not guilty to two counts of poisoning her daughter Stephanie at Inner London crown court yesterday.

She also denied two additional charges of cruelty to a person under 16, making a threat to kill and unlawful wounding, all of which were also against her daughter.

The charges relate to allegations of offences committed between January 1, 1979 and October 9, 1986 and October 10, 1986 and December 22, 1992 in Lambeth.

The poisoning-related charges read to the court were both that she “administered a poison or noxious substance namely a substance that included ginger and chilli with an intent to injure”.

Beeko spoke only to deny the charges and confirm her name, age and nationality, which she gave as British, during the 10-minute hearing.

Judge Nigel Seed adjourned the case and set a set a trial date for April 20 next year.

He said the trial, to be held at Inner London crown court, would last seven to 10 days.
