Mother slates pub after wine is taken off daughter, 19, during family meal

A customer has criticised a popular pub for its "lack of legal knowledge" about serving her 19-year-old daughter alcohol. The woman said staff took a glass of wine off the teenager while she was eating a family meal because she didn't have any ID, but youngsters are actually allowed by law to drink alcohol with a meal if the booze was purchased by an adult.

The mum highlighted the incident on a Tripadvisor review for The Lyttelton Arms in Hagley near Kidderminster under the headline "Rude staff. Lack of legal knowledge more training needed".

According to Birmingham Live, the manager of the bar replied to the post, pointing out that the law on serving youngsters to which the unhappy customer was referring was at a manager's discretion, and that it was company policy not to serve alcohol to anyone under 18. In the review the disgruntled punter said the family ordered food with soft drinks for the son and father, and a bottle of wine for the mother and daughter to share. She said that while they were eating their starters a waitress returned to the table and asked for ID from her 19-year-old daughter. The teenager didn't have any identification on her, and the glass of wine was taken away.

The mum said her husband had a photo of the daughter's driving licence on his phone but that was not accepted by staff. She claimed the pub handled the situation "really rudely and badly" and so the family asked for the bill and left, adding: "More legal training needed! Will not be returning!"

The general manager of the Lyttelton Arms respond to the online review. He pointed out that the law allowing 16-year-olds to drink alcohol was at the manager's discretion, and that it was company policy not to serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 18. He added that photos were "not acceptable as a form of ID" so they could not serve the daughter - the manager apologised for the embarrassment caused but stressed it was a strict policy which all staff followed.
