Mother's warning after 12-year-old son left badly burnt in viral fire challenge

A 12-year-old boy was left with severe burns after friends covered him in nail polish remover and set him alight as part of a viral fire challenge.

Schoolboy Jason Cleary took part in the challenge at a friend's house in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, U.S., last Saturday.

The incident left him with second degree burns and he was hospitalised for four days.

The fire challenge involves participants filming themselves applying flammable liquid to their bodies before setting themselves alight.

His mother Tabitha Cleary has now spoken out about the dangers of the challenge in a warning to other parents.

She told NBC affiliate WDIV: "I just want everybody to know that these challenges, or whatever they’re watching on YouTube, is not worth risking your life.

"My son got burned second-degree, and it could have been way worse."

Jason, describing what happened, told reporters that his friends initially set him alight using a small amount of remover, and the flames were small.

However, on the second attempt, they doused him in the liquid, and he was set ablaze.

“First time it was little and they swatted it off, second time, they kept spraying it," he said.

He is now recovering at home with his mother.

There have been no reported deaths since the fire challenge began in 2012, but numerous participants have been left with serious burns.

Police have not issued a statement on the latest incident.
