Mother's Day: Remembering the mothers of the Prime Ministers of the country

A mother's blessings have the greatest potential than every blessing put together. While on one hand motherhood is the biggest responsibility of the world, it has the highest power to shape a human being.

On Mother's Day, we remember the mothers of the Prime Ministers of this country since 1947.

Swarup Rani Nehru mother of Jawaharlal Nehru

India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born to Motilal Nehru and Swarup Rani Nehru on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad.

Wife of barrister Motilal Nehru, Swarup Rani was an advocate of civil disobedience against the salt laws of the British Raj. During 1920s-30s she actively participated in the movement and encouraged women to make salt.

Ramdulari Devi: Mother of Lal Bahadur Shastri

Independent India's second prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904 to school teacher Sharada Prasad Srivastava and Ramdulari Devi. Lal Bahadur Shastri lost his father when was only a year and half old. His mother took her three children to her father's house and settled down there.

Ishwari Devi Nanda: Mother of Gulzarilal Nanda

The third Prime Minister of India, Gulzarilal Nanda was born on July 4, 1898 in Sialkot Punjab to Balki Ram Nanda and Ishwari Devi Nanda.

Following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, he was a sworn in as Prime Minister of India on May 27, 1964. Again on January 11, 1966, he was sworn in as Prime Minister following the death of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri at Tashkent.

Vajiaben Desai: Mother of Morarji Desai

On 29 February, 1896, former Prime Minister of the country Morarji Desai was born to Ranchhodji Nagarji Desai and Vajiaben Desai in Bhadeli village, Bulsar district, Bombay Presidency which is currently Valsad district, Gujarat. He was the eldest of the 8 children of his parents.

Netra Kaur: Mother of Charan Singh

The fifth Prime Minister of the country, Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902. He was the eldest of five children of Mir Singh and Netra Kaur.

Kamala Nehru: Mother of Indira Gandhi

Country's only woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was the daughter of the first Prime Minister of the country, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru. She was born on November 19, 1917.

Indira Gandhi: Mother of Rajiv Gandhi

India's youngest Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, was born to Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi on August 20, 1944. He is the grandson of the first Prime Minister of this country, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Rani Raj Kanwar: Mother of Vishwanath Pratap Singh

India's only Prime Minister to have been former royalty, Vishwanath Pratap Singh or VP Singh, was born on 25 June 1931 to Raja Bahadur Ram Gopal Singh and Rani Raj Kanwar.

Chandra Sekhar

India's ninth Prime Minister Chandra Sekhar was born on 1 July 1927 in the village of Ibrahimpatti in Ballia district in eastern Uttar Pradesh to Sadanand Singh, a farmer and Draupadi Devi. He was was among the few individuals in the then ruling party who was imprisoned during the Emergency which was declared on June 25, 1975.

Rukminiamma: Mother of P. V. Narasimha Rao

On June 28, 1921, PV Narasimha Rao was born in a Telugu Brahmin family and was later adopted by Pamulaparthi Ranga Rao and Rukminamma when he was three years old.

Devamma: Mother of HD Deve Gowda

HD Deve Gowda was born on May 18, 1933 in Haradanahalli village of Holenarasipura taluk, Hassan District in Karnataka to Dodde Gowda and Devamma.

Pushpa Gujral: Mother of Inder Kumar Gujral

The 12th Prime Minister of the country was born to Avtar Narain Gujral and Pushpa Gujral on 4 December, 1919. He belongs to a family of freedom fighters: both his parents participated in the freedom struggle in Punjab.

Krishna Devi: Mother of Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924 to Krishna Devi and Krishna Bihari Vajpayee. He was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.

Amrit Kaur: Mother of Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh was born to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur on 26 September 1932. He was born in Gah, Punjab, British India and later migrated to Amritsar after the partition of India.

Heeraben Modi: Mother of Narendra Damodardas Modi

India's current Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi was born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Heeraben Modi on September 17, 1950. PM Modi regularly visits his mother at her residence in Gujarat's capital city Gandhinagar.
