Mother's Day plans 'ruined' as Nottinghamshire mum refused hot water for baby at pub

A Nottinghamshire mum says her Mother's Day plans were ruined after a pub refused to serve her hot water to help feed her baby. The mum said she had no choice but to leave the Badger Box in Kirkby-in-Ashfield along with her husband and two children on Sunday, March 20.

A spokesperson for the pub, situated in Derby Road, said there had been some confusion between staff and apologised for the inconvenience. She said she was told she could not have hot water to help make formula for her six-month-old because staff could not risk assess it.

"I'd been there before and they said it was no problem," she said. "I questioned why they can give it out for tea and coffee and they said it came from head office. I thought, how can I feed my baby? I asked if I can have cups of hot water and they said 'no because we know you're going to feed your child'.

"They made it sound like I was going to give him something bad." The mum went on to say it had ruined her family's plans for the afternoon. "We were planning for Mother's Day to have a meal there and a couple of drinks and had to leave because I couldn't feed my child which is ridiculous," she said.

"It's not exactly an outrageous suggestion, is it? We would have gone inside and asked for a table but obviously we couldn't do that as I couldn't feed him, so we went to another pub but they were all busy. So it completely kind of ruined the plans for the afternoon.

"Obviously I've got flasks if I know I'm going somewhere it can't be provided, but if I'm going somewhere local or a pub or restaurant I wouldn't take that as it's never ever been an issue previously. It's lucky I live local because if not I'd have had a screaming baby on the way home."

A spokesperson for Badger Box, which is run by Greene King, said: “Baby food items should be warmed in a jug of hot water on the back of the bar, out of the way of children. Guest safety is our priority, however, there was some confusion between the team on this occasion regarding the policy.

"We aim to be a family-friendly and welcoming pub and have reminded the team of the correct process moving forward. We apologise for any inconvenience caused on this occasion.”
