Afternoon tea has come a long way its creation in the 1800s, when it was invented by posh ladies as a meal to stave off hunger before dinner.

These days it's a great excuse to get together with the girls and mark special occasions, from birthdays, to engagements, to baby showers and everything in between.

Afternoon tea is a lovely way to treat your mammy on Mother's Day - and there are loads of fab spots around Dublin and surrounding areas where you can spoil her rotten!

Arnotts

The Henry Street department store is serving up a very special Mother's Day Afternoon Tea in The Kitchen Restaurant.

After you and your mum have shopped 'til you dropped, you can enjoy a selection of delicious savoury and sweet treats.

These include open smoked salmon on brown bread with chive cream cheese, honey baked ham sandwiches with Dijon mustard, freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and jam, macaroons, mini donuts and white chocolate and raspberry eclairs.

It's available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5pm until Sunday, 7 April and costs €25 per person or €30 per person with a glass of Prosecco.

Lindor Chocolate Afternoon Tea at the Morrison Hotel

Lindt Chocolate Ireland has teamed up with The Morrison Hotel in Dublin to create a bespoke, limited edition Lindor Afternoon Tea.

A range of savoury sandwiches and treats will be served up alongside decadent chocolate delights from a Lindor orange chocolate tartlet to Lindor chocolate and coconut truffles, a dark and white Lindor chocolate mousse to a Lindor milk chocolate nemesis.

Not only that, but each guest leaves with a special Lindor gift that'll give your mum some sweet memories of the day.

The Lindor Afternoon Tea is priced at €30.00pp including tea and coffee or €37.50pp with a glass of prosecco.

If you feel like really splashing out, you can add in a special Lindor cocktail for €9pp.

It's available from The Morrison Hotel on Lower Ormond Quay from Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 March from 12.00pm to 6pm and can be booked here.

The Powerscourt Hotel

Treat your mum to a beaut-TEA-ful afternoon in the five-star Powerscourt Hotel Resort & Spa this Mother's Day.

A selection of delicious savoury sandwiches will be served up alongside three mouthwatering cakes inspired by the Carter Beauty’s Zodiac Collection.

Guests will also be gifted with a lipstick from the Word of Mouth Matte Lipstick collection, which offers 20 shades all named after inspirational women.

Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links

The Shelbourne Hotel

Considered one of Dublin's plushest hotels, the Shelbourne's afternoon tea is definitely priced to match its reputation at €59 per person and €75 for the champagne afternoon tea.

But while it's pricey it's definitely worth it at least once in your lifetime.

Sit back, sip tea under a chandelier, while being warmed by a roaring open fire to the soundtrack of soft piano music.

The Merrion Hotel

A 5-star experience with The Merrion Hotel promises that its 'Art Tea' is "the most lavish afternoon tea in Dublin".

With food served on fine china, its cakes are inspired by 19th or 20th-century artworks by Jack B. Yeats, William Scott, and Louis Le Brocquy.

It costs €55 per person or €67.50 with a glass of champagne.

Clontarf Castle

Built in 1837, Clontarf Castle is almost as old as afternoon tea itself. 

The hotel's 'Fusion Tea' is described as a "gastronomique journey", in which traditional afternoon tea meets modern inspirations to create an eclectic dining experience.

It costs €42.00 per person or €48 per person with a glass of Prosecco.

The Atrium Lounge at the Morelands Grill

Another of the more extravagant locations on this list, this Westmoreland Street spot does afternoon tea with a twist: Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea.

It's a unique experience inspired by Alice in Wonderland, where the tearoom is decorated with nonsense sign posts and goldfish swimming in bowls, and the movie plays on screens in the background.

It's available Monday to Friday from 2:00pm – 6:00pm, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00pm – 6:00pm

It costs €49 for two people from Monday to Thursday and €45 per person on weekends.

House Dublin

Served from 2pm every day, afternoon tea in House on Leeson Street is served in front of an open fire in a Georgian Townhouse.

Alternatively, you can have your tea outside on the Terrace in the sun, and sample a choice of the venue's tailor-made afternoon tea cocktails.

It costs €28 per person or €38 per person with a glass of Mumm Champagne.

Dunboyne Castle 

Offering a private experience in the secluded dining rooms of its Georgian house, Dunboyne Castle's afternoon tea is practically a complete dining experience.

The entire menu is designed by Sinead O’Brien, Dunboyne Castle’s pastry chef, who selects seasonal ingredients to make the treat a little bit different.

It costs €48 for two or €62 for two including a glass of prosecco each.
