Stoke City have confirmed that the mother of the Senegal striker Mame Biram Diouf was killed in last month’s stampede during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

More than 1,000 people are now believed to have died in the crush near Mecca, although Saudi authorities have said the official number is 769.

Stoke released a statement on Tuesday offering their support for the former Manchester United striker, who joined on a free transfer in 2014.

“Stoke City wish to extend sincere condolences to Mame Diouf following the tragic death of his mother,” it read.

“The club will provide Mame with all the support he needs at this extremely difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends.”

Pilgrims from several different countries are reported to have died in the stampede in Mina on 24 September.
