Mother of schoolgirl Ana Kriegel fights back tears during murder trial as she recalls last time she saw her daughter

The mother of a schoolgirl has fought back tears as she recalled the last time she saw her daughter and the desperate search to find her.

Geraldine Kriegel was giving evidence at the trial of two 14-year-old boys charged with her daughter’s murder.

Geraldine told the court that she woke Anastasia or Ana Kriegel at 8.15am on May 14, 2018.

She told the court that she had a meeting in the city centre at the solicitor’s firm where she worked.

Court hears 'homemade zombie mask', knee pads and tape found in possession of one of boys accused of violent murder of schoolgirl Ana Kriegel

She said: “(Ana) liked for me to wake her in the morning and I kissed her goodbye.”

She gave Ana a note so that she could get out of school early to attend her counsellor.

Shortly after 4pm Ana rang her mobile twice but Geraldine texted back to say that she was at a meeting.

The mother returned home and found that Ana was not there.

“I was immediately concerned, she had no reason to be with him.

“She had no friends, no one called for Ana.”

Geraldine said she texted her daughter with two words: “home now” but did not get an answer.

Geraldine added: “I was so worried, I texted again, ‘answer me now or I am calling the police’.

“I was feeling like a paranoid mother, between being over protective and being terrified.”

Geraldine said that her daughter was a “ communicator”, never ignored her calls and was never late.

The family carried out a desperate search of the general area and then went to the local garda station where they made a report.

The court was told that Geraldine and her husband Patrique would on May 18, 2018 go to the Dublin City Morgue to identify the remains of their daughter in the company of a garda.

Two teens plead not guilty to murdering Kildare schoolgirl Ana Kriegel

Geraldine told the court that she also looked at her WhatsApp account and found that the last time Ana accessed her account was at 5.13pm on the day she vanished.

Two teenage boys are charged with the murder of 14-year-old Anastasia Kriegel on May 14, 2018. One of the boys Boy A is also charged with aggravated sexual assault. Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Boy A and Boy B had their head bowed during the evidence of the grieving mother.

The trial continues at the Central Criminal Court this afternoon before Mr Justice Paul McDermott and a jury.
