Mother of dead baby found on Gold Coast extradited, charged

Gifts were left at a memorial at Surfers Paradise where the girl was found dead.

The mother of a baby who was found dead after washing up on a beach on the Gold Coast has been extradited to New South Wales and refused bail in court.

A nine-month-old girl was discovered unresponsive on the edge of the surf in Surfers Paradise last month.

She was declared dead at the scene.

The child's 46-year-old father was arrested last month and was charged with murder. He remains before the courts.

Queensland Police will allege the baby died in NSW and drifted in the water for two days after she was allegedly thrown in a harbour at Tweed Heads.

NSW Police said this morning the 23-year-old woman was charged with failing to provide for a child causing danger of death.

She appeared at Southport Magistrates Court in Queensland before being escorted to Tweeds Heads Police Station and has been refused bail.

She appeared at Byron Local Court in a closed session, which was adjourned to next Tuesday.
