Mother Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter After Baby Dies During Co-Sleeping

Ugandan court to issue verdict in case of U.S. couple facing child torture charges in Kampala

A tragic incident in North Carolina has led to the charging of a 24-year-old mother with involuntary manslaughter following the death of her 7-week-old son during co-sleeping. The mother, identified as the suspect, is also facing charges of felony child abuse serious injury and child abuse/neglect serious physical injury in connection with the infant's passing.

Authorities in Wilmington responded to a distress call reporting an unconscious infant who was not breathing in the early hours of October 3, 2023. Upon arrival, the mother was described as extremely emotional and frantic, informing officers that her baby needed help. The infant was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately did not survive.

According to the autopsy report from the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the baby's cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to an unsafe sleep environment. The report also revealed that the mother had been using THC products on the day leading up to the incident. Additionally, the infant was found to have been suffering from a common cold infection.

Tragically, this was not the first such incident involving the mother. In 2022, another child in her care had also died while co-sleeping, though authorities at that time did not find sufficient evidence to press charges related to that case.

The mother is currently in custody on a $500,000 secured bond as the legal proceedings unfold. In light of this heartbreaking situation, it is essential to raise awareness about child abuse and provide resources for those who may suspect such incidents. If you suspect child abuse, please reach out to the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline for assistance.

Let us all work together to protect the well-being of our children and prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
