Mother charged after accidental shooting of 8-year-old son

April 09--A mother is facing criminal charges after police say her 8-year-old son was accidentally shot while playing with a gun.

Micquelyn Biles, 31, of the 3700 block of West 13th Street, was charged with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and one misdemeanor count of child endangerment after her son was shot in the abdomen Tuesday.

About 10:45 a.m., her son and another 8-year-old found a gun inside Biles' apartment. While the two children were handling the gun, the son was accidentally shot by the other child, according to a police statement.

The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital by his mother and was listed in good condition Thursday morning, police said.

Police determined the gun belonged to Biles' boyfriend. Biles, who police say is a convicted felon, lied to investigators about knowing the gun was inside her home, according to a police statement.

Biles and her son also initially told police the shooting happened outside, police said.

As of Thursday morning, Biles' boyfriend was not in custody, but police said the investigation remains ongoing.

In 2003, Biles pleaded guilty to felony charges for forgery and received 18 months probation, court records show.

Biles is due in bond court Thursday afternoon.
