Mother charged with manslaughter over toddler's death after partner charged with murder

The mother of a 20-month-old toddler who went into cardiac arrest and later died has been charged with manslaughter by NSW Police a week after her then de-facto partner was charged with murder.

Detectives took the woman into custody at a home in Tarro, near Maitland, as part of ongoing investigations into the toddler's death.

A 26-year-old man, the woman's de-facto partner at the time, was charged with the murder of the 20-month-old girl last week.

The arrests stem from an incident on June 19 at a home on Burgess Parade, Tarro, in NSW's Hunter Region, where the girl went into cardiac arrest.

Police alleged the toddler suffered significant injuries to her torso, head and internal organs.

The child was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to John Hunter Hospital, but later died.

The 26-year-old had been living with the mother and the toddler at the time.

Detectives are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the girl's death.
