Mother and young child die in tragic water incident at west London park, police say no foul play suspected

A mother and child have died after getting into difficulty in the water at a park in west London.

Emergency services were called to Elthorne Park on Saturday after reports that two people were in trouble in the water. Despite efforts by paramedics, police and members of the public, both were pronounced dead at the scene, the Metropolitan Police said, as reported by the BBC.

An investigation has been launched to establish exactly what happened. Police said early indications suggest there is no suspicion of foul play, and officers are working to formally identify the victims and inform their next of kin.

Detective Superintendent Pete Thackray said: “This is a tragic incident in which a woman and her young child have lost their lives. Our thoughts are with their loved ones.

“I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the first responders and members of the public who did their very best in an incredibly challenging situation.

“While an investigation into what took place is under way, all initial indications are that the circumstances are not suspicious.”

The park connects to the Grand Union Canal Walk and is located near the River Brent, a tributary of the River Thames, where the incident is believed to have occurred.
