Mother and son have lucky escape when tree falls across Tasmanian highway

A huge tree has missed crushing a car by "a few seconds", with a man and his mother miraculously escaping injury.

Police said the pair were on their way to Tasmania's Cradle Mountain when the "20-plus-metre tree" fell and landed across the highway on Sunday.

The white Mitsubishi wagon they were travelling in crashed into the fallen tree in the drizzling rain.

The driver of the car, a 41-year-old man from Hobart and his 71-year-old mother from Queensland, were assessed at the scene by Ambulance Tasmania and were luckily uninjured, police said.

"Had the tree fallen a few seconds later, this crash would have undoubtedly resulted in serious injuries or worse," Senior Constable Sven Mason said.

"The weather at the time was overcast with drizzle, little wind, and there was no early indication that this tree was likely to fall," Senior Constable Mason said.

He thanked members of the public who came to the pair's assistance following the crash.
