A mother and her four children were able to escape a Brisbane home where a man brandishing a weapon was shot by officers, police say.

Police received calls about the armed man at an address in Stretton around 7pm on Sunday.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said the 43-year-old man allegedly advanced at officers with a "large metal sharpening file".

"The man was intent and highly motivated to cause injury to one of our officers," he said.

He said there had been a "rapidly evolving domestic violence situation" occur between the man and his wife.

"Due to the dramatic nature of the male and his behaviour, the wife has locked him into the garage area," he said.

"At that time some of the children fled into the backyard and were hiding behind bushes and were seeking help from the neighbours."

He said police arrived within three minutes of receiving the call and cordoned off the area. The garage doors facing outwards were opened when police arrived.

"Only a matter of a few moments later, the male person ran down the slope of the driveway towards an officer who was standing on the left-hand side," he said.

'Tragedy for everyone involved'

Superintendent Massingham said the man confronted the senior constable very quickly and the officer fired his gun, striking the man in the hip.

"After being struck, the male then lunged towards the officer with the implement. The officer than fired a second time, striking the offender in the left shoulder. At that time the offender has thrown the implement at the officer. It missed him," he said.

The children, aged between seven and 14 years of age were removed from the scene as soon as possible, as well as the 41-year-old woman.

"This is indeed a tragedy for everybody involved," he said.

He said there had been no previous calls to the address by police.

"So the motivation around what's occurred here last night are simply unclear at this stage."

Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers said the use of firearms was a last resort.

"They had no other option than to use their firearm... and police immediately used their tactical first aid kits and rendered first aid," he said.

"We don't want to use our firearms, it is an absolute last resort but we will do whatever we can to preserve life and try and protect people."

The man was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

It was the second police shooting on Sunday, after police shot another man they said was brandishing a knife on the Gold Coast.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but Mr Leavers said both men were expected to recover from their injuries.
