Mother and Baby Home victims to hear of cash redress scheme this week

Mother and Baby Home victims will hear news of a major new cash redress scheme this week.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has promised he “will not be found wanting” in the Government response to the Mother and Baby Homes report this week.

The report will reveal that as many as 9,000 may have died in the 18 homes over 75 years.

Mr Martin has promised “a comprehensive suite of measures” which is believed to include a new cash redress scheme for survivors.

It is understood that the brave victims of the Mother and Baby Homes system will also see new legislation introduced by Minister for Children, Roderic O’Gorman, to help people trace their birth parents, or their children, through the harsh adoption homes, if they wish.

Many have found it was like banging their heads against a brick wall trying to find the truth in recent years and the Government wants to remove any potential barriers to the truth.

The popular 2013 film, Philomena, starring Steve Coogan and Judi Dench, chronicled the harrowing fight for one woman seeking the identity of her son decades after she was forced to give him up for adoption.

Details of the report were leaked over the weekend ahead of the report being brought to Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.

The Government has said it is not happy with this and will be discussing the situation at the meeting too.

Mr Martin has committed to apologising in the Dáil on Wednesday and providing as much assistance as possible to all those affected by the State scandal.

A Government spokesman said: “The Taoiseach has committed to a State apology, something that has been discussed and called for over many months.

“The Taoiseach and Minister for Children promised the government would not be found wanting after this report was published.

“We understand the Minister of Children’s concerns (about the leak of the report) and we will discuss these further at a government level.

“It is important, as we have previously stated, that we respond to the needs of survivors with a comprehensive suite of measures upon publication of the report.”
