MOTD pundit explains why he continues to back Liverpool for the title despite Man City dominance

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has pinpointed where Liverpool can improve this season to pip Manchester City and claim their first Premier League title.

The Reds missed out on the 2018/19 trophy by just one point, despite registering an impressive tally of 97, the third-highest Premier League points tally in history.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went on to lift the Champions League, their seventh European trophy, but the talk around Anfield this season is very much about securing their first Premier League crown.

After missing out on the title despite a near-perfect season, many have questioned whether Liverpool can reach the same heights this season.

Despite winning back-to-back titles, Pep Guardiola has strengthened his squad significantly with the additions of Rodri and Joao Cancelo, whilst Liverpool only brought in Adrian to replace the outgoing Simon Mignolet and Harvey Elliott from Fulham, who is one for the future.

However, Wright has highlighted the area he thinks Klopp’s side can improve on, which could see them end City’s dominance.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5Live’s Monday Night Club, the former Arsenal striker said: “What I’m seeing with Liverpool this season and I’ve got say, Manchester City are magnificent.

“Liverpool will have to learn from the slip-up against Leicester City at home when City lost to Newcastle.

“They lost the league by a point and the point I’m making is, Liverpool will learn from last season is, how important it is to not drop my points when you get the opportunity to win games at home. That’s what it will come down to.”

Manchester City’s strength in depth is another reason many feel the Reds won’t be able to end their title dominance.

Liverpool, by contrast, don’t have the same quality cover for key players such as Mohamad Salah or Virgil can Dijk.

Wright still believes, though, that last season’s experience will only make their players more determined for success.

“Yes, I do (think Liverpool can achieve 97 points),” he asserted.

“Why not? They’ve done it before. Can City do 98 again, 100 again? You’d probably say yes. Are Liverpool going to chase them down because of the experience they have gained? Yes.

“If Manchester City are capable of getting 100 points then I think Liverpool are capable of getting 99, or vice versa. I think Man City are the team to beat, but I’ve gone for Liverpool again.”
