Mostafa Mohamed Rangers transfer claim as former boss reveals personal plea from Steven Gerrard

Mostafa Mohamed's former manager has claimed Steven Gerrard made a personal plea to sign him.

The 22-year-old Zamalek striker was linked with a move to Rangers in the January transfer window amid reports he tried to force through a transfer.

The Cairo club reportedly asked for £3 million for the deal to go through and Mohamed remained at Zamalek, with the Premiership side playing down their interest and eventually signing Florian Kamberi on-loan from Hibs.

But Serbian boss Milutin Sredojevic, who was sacked by Zamalek after just four months at the club and is now manager of Zambia, claims Gerrard took a personal interest in Mohamed.

He said: " Steven Gerrard called me personally to ask about Mostafa Mohamed. He wanted to know what he was like as a player and at training.

"But Zamalek made it very difficult for the transfer to go through because they don't want to looked at as a selling club.

"So the transfer never happened, but Steven Gerrard was very keen indeed for the move to go through.

"Mostafa is a player with a bright future. He is an incredible talent who will of course go to Europe one day soon."

Mohamed, who has been capped twice by Egypt, won the top scorer award in the Under 23s African Cup of Nations in November as he helped his country win the trophy.
