Most want laws for truth in political ads

Laws to ensure political advertising is truthful are strongly backed by voters across the spectrum. (AAP)

Nine out of 10 Australians believe the federal parliament should pass laws to ensure political advertising is truthful.

Research by the Australia Institute found truth in political advertising laws are strongly supported by voters across the political spectrum.

Thirty nine prominent Australians have also signed an open letter calling for the parliament to pass such laws.

It coincides with independent MP Zali Steggall's introduction of a truth in political advertising bill into the House of Representatives.

The signatories include Nobel Laureate Peter Doherty, former political party leaders Carmen Lawrence, John Hewson and Cheryl Kernot, and retired judges David Harper and Anthony Whealy.

"Any genuine attempt to clean up our politics must begin with a commitment to truth telling," Dr Hewson, a former Liberal leader, said.

"Truth in campaign ads is an important beginning."

Ms Kernot, the former Democrats leader, agreed.

"It remains absolutely unacceptable that an election's outcome can be decided by deliberately deceptive political advertising," she said.

Senior researcher at the Australia Institute Bill Browne said the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for politicians to be honest and transparent, and the serious consequences of public distrust and disengagement.

"Last year, the ACT passed truth in political advertising laws unanimously, with Labor, Liberal and Greens politicians working together," Mr Browne said.

"It is time for the Parliament of Australia to follow their lead."
