Why are the windows tilted inward?

A common belief is that the slanted glass prevents sunlight from reflecting into the eyes of approaching pilots. However, the LiveScience report explains that this is not the reason, especially since nearby airport terminals and surrounding buildings typically use standard vertical windows.

The real advantage benefits the people working inside the tower.

Air traffic controllers spend long hours monitoring aircraft and cannot afford visual distractions while observing the airfield. Everyday reflections from computer monitors, lighting, or even a wristwatch could interfere with their concentration.

By angling the windows inward, unwanted light generated inside the control tower is reflected upward toward the ceiling instead of back into the controllers' line of sight. The ceiling is painted black so those reflections are absorbed rather than bounced around the room.

As the report explains, this prevents something as simple as "the glow from a wristwatch across the room" from being mistaken for an incoming object.

The windows are also installed at a precise angle.

According to the report, airport control tower windows are positioned 15 degrees from vertical at the top , helping reduce reflections coming from both inside and outside the tower while giving controllers an unobstructed panoramic view of the surrounding airspace.

How do the windows improve safety?

The report by Kenyan.co.ke references Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) guidelines, which explain that approach controllers manage aircraft arriving and departing an airport while maintaining safe separation between flights.

According to the KCAA, "Approach controllers have the responsibility of maintaining the required separation between aircraft that are departing and arriving. They cannot see the aircraft in the air but they follow them on their radar displays. They take over the responsibility of the aircraft from Tower controllers after aircraft pass a certain altitude after departure and hand over arriving aircraft to the tower at a certain altitude when the tower controller is able to see the aircraft."

For tower controllers who rely on direct visibility around the airport, minimizing reflections helps maintain clear sightlines and improves situational awareness throughout changing traffic conditions.
