Most streamed TV shows in Newcastle revealed in lockdown binge-watch survey

A survey has revealed the most streamed TV shows in Newcastle.

Comparison and switching service USwitch conducted a survey of television streaming habits across the UK as many of us continue to turn to programmes, documentaries and movies to help us get through lockdown.

Their data uncovered that a third (33%) of people said streaming online TV helped them to feel less lonely over the past year, with 43% saying they’ve binged an entire series in a single day (guilty as charged!).

The show that came out on top nationally was The Simpsons with 54% of people surveyed saying they'd' watched it more than once, just ahead of Friends on 53% with Gavin & Stacey in third on 45%.

But Geordie viewers are clearly after something more hard-hitting as it was US drama Breaking Bad that took the top spot for Newcastle.

The drama, which sees a underpaid and stressed out teacher turn to a life of crime, originally aired its five seasons from 2008 to 2013, but is still clearly very popular, particularly on Tyneside, with 28% of those surveyed in the region saying they's watch it more than once.

The top 10 for Newcastle is...

1. Breaking Bad - 28.40%

2. Game of Thrones - 25.93%

3. The Walking Dead - 24.69%

4. Stranger Things - 20.99%

5. The Crown - 16.05%

6. The Mandalorian - 16.05%

7. Lucifer - 14.81%

8. American Horror Story - 14.81%

9. Orange Is the New Black - 12.35%

10. Sex Education - 9.88%

Commenting on the research, Nick Baker, broadband expert, at USwitch said: “Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+, consumers are spoilt for choice when it comes to finding the latest box set to binge-watch. This means the third of us who rely on streaming TV to combat loneliness have a vast library at our fingertips.

“With so many people spending more time searching for something to watch than actually watching, users should try to take advantage of watch lists. There are also functions such as Netflix’s randomizer which may uncover some hidden gems we might not ordinarily choose.

“However, even though popular new shows are released almost weekly, it’s comforting to know that your all-time favourites will be there at the touch of a button."
