Scotland's most adopted dog breeds as searches skyrocket for furry lockdown companions

Scots were mostly interested in adopting greyhounds during lockdown, a new study has found.

Research carried out by Oxbridge found that there was on average 140 Google searches per month about adopting the breed over the last year.

The animal care course provider found that Scots were also extremely interested in getting a Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund or French Bulldog as their lockdown companion.

Online searches for dog adoption spiked by 203% over the past year as many people grew lonely while staying at home.

The number of people looking to rehome a dog also surged during each national lockdown.

Searches for pugs continued to decline rapidly as their decline in popularity continues.

Over half of the most popular dogs are small breeds with majority in the companion group.

Mongrels were among the least adopted dogs despite the number in need of a good home, fewer health issues and a longer life expectancy.

Claire Barber, Animal Care Specialist at Oxbridge commented: “Although it’s heartening to see such a healthy rise in animal adoption as a result of the pandemic, it’s clear many animals are being overlooked based on their breed alone.

“Those looking to adopt might also consider less popular breeds, which are desperately in need of a good home.”

The most searched dog breeds during lockdown in Scotland were:

  1. Greyhound
  2. Cocker Spaniel
  3. Dachshund
  4. French Bulldog
  5. Cockapoo
  6. Golden Retriever
  7. Whippet
  8. Beagle
  9. Border Collie
  10. Husky
