Most Scots believe Holyrood should have final say over Indyref2

Most Scots believe Holyrood should have the final say over a referendum, a poll has found.

About 61 per cent of respondents said the Scottish Parliament, not Westminster, should ultimately decide on IndyRef2.

The poll comes as SNP MP Mhairi Black said there “could be mileage” in MSPs staging a referendum without the consent of the UK Government.

Nicola Sturgeon and Boris Johnson are in a standoff over the PM’s refusal to back another vote. Sturgeon will outline her next move this week in a statement at Holyrood.

The poll by Survation for pro-independence think tank Progress Scotland found most respondents believed IndyRef2 should be a matter for Holyrood.

Progress Scotland managing director Angus Robertson, who used to lead the SNP at Westminster, said: “There is a strong majority among voters in Scotland that it should be the Scottish Parliament that decides on the future holding of an independence referendum.

"Not only is there strong support from SNP and Yes voters, but also from a significant minority of Labour and No voters.”

In recent weeks, senior Labour figures have called for MSPs, not MPs, to have control over IndyRef2. MSP Monica Lennon made this demand and colleague Alex Rowley said the proposal should be considered.
