Most popular spring-inspired baby names - with top choice meaning 'birdlike'

Spring is a time for new beginnings, and for many parents-to-be, it also coincides happily with the arrival of their new baby. Above all other seasons, springtime holds many positive, hopeful connotations, with plenty of fresh and pretty inspiration for baby name choices.

With a new baby born approximately every 48 seconds, it's perhaps unsurprising that many excited new parents will currently be looking to springtime imagery when naming their little one, and one name, in particular, is said to be especially popular.

Now insurance company Protectivity has collated a list of the most popular spring-themed names in the UK, and there are plenty of lovely ones to choose from.

The name Ava, which means 'birdlike and lively', was found to be the most popular spring name for girls and also ranked fourth overall in a list of most popular baby girl names of 2021.

In second place for girls was Ivy, which means 'climbing evergreen plant', followed by floral Lily and Florence in third and fourth place respectively. Another nature name, Willow, took the fifth spot.

Adam, which means ground or earth, was the most popular spring name for boys and was also ranked 44th for overall baby boy names back in 2021. This earthy moniker was followed by the names Oakley, Riley, Sonny, and Stanley.

The 15 most popular spring-themed girls' names are:

1. Ava - A name of Latin origin that means 'birdlike and lively'.

2. Ivy - Derived from the Old English term for ivy plant, Ivy means 'climbing evergreen plant'.

3. Lily - A Latin name that means 'pure'.

4. Florence - The name of a beautiful Italian city, Florence means 'blossoming, flourishing and prosperous'.

5. Willow - This name means 'willow tree', a tree known for its grace and elegance.

6. Rosie - A name of Latin origin, Rosie means 'rose', one of the most beloved flowers.

7. Daisy - Meaning 'day's eye', few names evoke such peaceful memories of wandering sunny fields in springtime.

8. Poppy - The name Poppy means 'red flower', and has become a powerful symbol of sacrifice and strength in wartime.

9. Violet - Another very soft, sweet nature name, Violet means 'purple'.

10. Chloe - Of Greek origin, Chloe means 'blooming' and has strong associations with fertility.

11. Iris - In Green mythology, Iris was a messenger among the gods. The name means 'rainbow', a common sight during April showers.

12. Jasmine - A nod to the fragrant flower, the Persian name Jasmine means 'gift from God'.

13. Primrose - A 19th century British name, Primrose means 'first rose', and could be a lovely choice for a girl born in early spring.

14. Blossom - Meaning 'flower-like', there is perhaps no other name that so instantly conjures up the image of branches filled with pink blossons.

15. Dahlia - Another name with a floral feel, Dahlia means 'valley'.

1. Adam - Meaning 'ground or earth', Adam was also the name of the first man in the Christian Bible.

2. Oakley - Meaning 'meadow of oak trees', Oakley could be the perfect name for parents looking for a nature-inspired moniker.

3. Riley - Riley means 'woods clearing', and is another name filled with natural beauty.

4. Sonny - An Anglo-Saxon name that means 'son'.

5. Stanley - A name of British origin, Stanley means 'stony meadow'.

6. Harley - This is name which takes its meaning from two Old English words: hara - or 'hare', and leah, or 'meadow'.

7. River - The name River means 'flowing body of water', and has a very tranquil feel to it.

8. Robin - Meaning 'bright' and 'shining', Robin also puts people in mind of the sweet red-breasted bird.

9. Maxwell - A Scottish name which means 'great stream'.
