Most popular Scots baby names revealed as Marvel and Nirvana make unusual favourites

The days of every classroom being filled with Margarets, Johns and Susans appear to be long gone, according to the National Records of Scotland.

A full list of the names of the 46,355 babies born in 2020 shows that unusual names are increasingly popular.

Some boys were called Bear-Blu, Burn, Cloud, Great, Guru, Hero, Justice, Marvel, Merlin, Sailor and Smokey.

Girl names included Chanel, Crystal-Jordan, Diamond-Rose, Envy, Loveday, Mercedes, Nirvana and Storm-Rose.

Only four girls received Nicola Sturgeon’s first name and one boy was called Boris.

Isla overtook Olivia as the top name for baby girls for the first time, with Olivia taking the second spot and Emily now being the third most popular name.

Jack remains the most popular boy’s name, holding on to the top spot for the 13th consecutive year.

Noah is now the second most popular boy’s name, having jumped from seventh last year, and James stays
in third.

A separate list released by NRS revealed that Smith, Brown and Wilson remain the three top surnames in Scotland, where they have stayed since 1975.
