Most popular dog breeds in Wales for adopting as demand at all-time high

People in Wales are mostly interested in adopting a Cockapoo, a new study has found.

Using search data from Google, Oxbridge has revealed the most and least adopted breeds across Wales.

With people spending more time at home than ever due to the pandemic, searches for dog adoption in the UK are now at an all-time high and has increased by 203% over the past year with spikes during each lockdown.

It's the highest level of interest since records began in 2004.

In Wales, the top three most adopted dog breeds are Cockapoo, Dachshund and French Bulldog.

Here are the most adopted dog breeds in Wales:

1. Cockapoo

2. Dachshund

3. French Bulldog

4. Greyhound

5. Cocker Spaniel

6. Golden Retriever

7. Whippet

8. Beagle

9. Pug

10. Border Collie

Data from across the UK shows that Greyhounds are the popular dogs followed by Cockapoos and French Bulldogs.

Searches where owners are looking to rehome their dogs also increased by 103% in the past year across the UK – spikes with each national lockdown showing the pressures of the pandemic.

Claire Barber, Animal Care Specialist at Oxbridge said: "Although it’s heartening to see such a healthy rise in animal adoption as a result of the pandemic, it’s clear many animals are being overlooked based on their breed alone.

"Those looking to adopt might also consider less popular breeds, which are desperately in need of a good home.”
