The Vauxhall Corsa has been named the nation's favourite car for young drivers, in a new motoring report.
The 26-year-old model, owned by German car manufacturer Opel, is followed by the Ford Fiesta and the Volkswagen Polo.
That's according to an index by MoneySupermarket, which analysed four million enquiries made between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019 to uncover the vehicles that are most popular with those aged 17-20, and the typical cost of insurance.
Despite the Vauxhall Corsa being the most popular car for Brits aged 17-20, drivers within this age range typically pay £943 for a fully comprehensive policy, while those over 21 pay an average of 68% less to insure the same vehicle, at £562.
Young drivers who own the sixth most popular first car, the Volkswagen Golf, typically pay the most for their insurance, with an average fully comprehensive policy costing £1,651.
This is over £1,000 more than what a young driver of a Ford KA pays, which comes to an average of £644.
"When calculating premiums, insurers take many factors into consideration which can result in younger drivers paying a considerable amount more than other age groups," explained Rachel Wait, at MoneySuperMarket.
"This is mainly because a high number of personal injury claims come from accidents that involve younger drivers."
However drivers could keep costs down by taking out a telematics policy , also known as black box car insurance, which uses data – where, when and how people drive – to determine the cost of car insurance. Other ways to cut premiums include by taking out a pay-by-mile policy which charges you on distance.
"Drivers could also bring down their premium by reducing their mileage, opting for a higher excess and not just accepting the first quote they receive. By shopping around, you could easily find a cheaper deal with a different insurer and save yourself up to £222 in the process," Wait added.
