Most people still not sure there will be election next year: poll

Most people support an election taking place sometime between Feb 24 and May 5 next year, but are not convinced it will actually happen, Suan Dusit Poll reported on Sunday.

The poll was conducted between June 26-30 on 1,136 people nationwide after news reports that following a meeting between the government, political parties and the Election Commission an election would most likely be held sometime between Feb 24-May 5.

Asked whether they are confident there will be an election in 2019, 36.88% said they are not very confident and 20.86% not confident at all (67.74% altogether). On the other side, 25.09% said they are fairly confident and 17.17% said they are very confident (42.26% altogether). Those who doubt an election will take place cite the fact that no election date has been set and no definitive agreement reached.

Asked how they Thai politics will change if there is an election, 52.34% said the political situation and the economy will improve; 42.06% said it will remain unchanged as politics is driven by power and special interests; and 5.60% said the situation will become worse, with most problems remaining unsolved.
