Most likely places to have car stolen in UK - see where your area ranks

East London has been named the car theft capital of the UK.

Those in the Ilford and Barking post code are most likely to get their vehicle stolen, with a rate of 20.3 per 1,000 people.

Close behind is Romford, also East London, with a rate of 19.1, data reveals.

Meanwhile Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands is safest for owners with a rate of just 0.5.

The data from Moneysupermarket, which analysed over 5.8 million car insurance enquiries, found London is the worst motor thefts region at 11.2 per 1,000 people, followed by the West Midlands at 10.9 and Yorkshire and the Humber at 7.9.

The South West is the safest region on average with a car theft rate of 2.7 per 1,000 capita.

Drivers aged 40 to 49 face the highest risk of car thefts while 17-19-year-olds face least risk – mainly due to older folks’ cars being more desirable to thieves.

Dave Merrick, of Moneysupermarket, said: “Location may impact the cost of [car insurance] premiums.

“Fully comprehensive is a good option for drivers to protect themselves from theft, accidental damage and loss of personal items.”
