Most Irish people want to travel abroad as soon as they get Covid jab

More than two thirds of people plan to travel abroad as soon as they have been vaccinated against COVID-19, new findings show.

Research from travel insurance provider Allianz Partners found that 69% of Irish people plan to jet overseas as soon as they receive the coronavirus jab.

Almost half, 47%, of hopeful holidaymakers plan to go on a trip this summer while around a quarter, or 23%, are waiting until next year.

More than half are planning to travel abroad when the lockdown is lifted while 35% plan to staycation in Ireland.

Some 42% of people are keen to travel once things reopen but 31% will wait three months before travelling once the lockdown is lifted.

Last year, over a third of people didn’t holiday at all while 62% had staycations here in Ireland.

Some 40% of would-be holidaymakers think a flexible change and cancellation policy will motivate them to travel again.

Managing director at Allianz Partners, Roland Hesse, said that the COVID-19 vaccine will encourage people to take a well-earned holiday post-lockdown.

He said: “Although it is uncertain as to when we will all be vaccinated and ready to take flight and depart, it seems like Irish people are inspired by the COVID-19 vaccine to seize the occasion of exploring the world of travel again.

“While many consumers are staying vigilant towards the risks and are attentive of the advice of the government, it is also clear that most Irish people will certainly grab the chance to escape the country and get their travel plans back on track once they have received the vaccine.”
